Natural Helpers—Who Are They?
Since 2001, dozens of volunteers from our community—men and women, business execs and retirees, faith leaders and educators—have been specially trained and carefully matched with court-involved youth. These Natural Helpers are mentors and motivators, they have information and insight, they listen, they share, they encourage. Most importantly, Natural Helpers have the heart and the hope necessary to help youth overcome challenges and build on their strengths.

I have always had a strong need to help others. After hearing about this program on TV,
I just knew this is something I had to do. I am very concerned about our youth.

—Shirley Bush

When I saw the volunteer opportunity in the newspaper it
weighed heavily on my heart, so I called and here I am.

—Melissa Phillips

I chose to become involved because of the belief that all children have the
intent to excel, some need help in getting back to that direction.
—Darryl Williams

When I was young, folks helped me out when I was in need,
and I would like to help out someone else in need.

—Clifford Stumpff

I strongly believe that children are not inherently "bad"—rather they act out according to what is "broken" in their life. I have a desire to help facilitate change in their life by providing tools they can use to better respond to stresses in their lives. I want to offer love and concern to our youth on an unconditional basis.
—Tom Shoemaker

I want kids to win in life. I want to encourage youth to believe in themselves
and reach for the stars.

—Percy Marshall

Hopefully, by offering my experience, strength, and hope along with support, I can contribute to positive ways in young lives.
—Tom MacDonald

How Does It Work?
It’s easy to get involved. Simply fill out an application and agree to a background check, a reference check and an interview. Upon acceptance, Natural Helpers must complete eight hours of required training before being matched with a youth in need. Natural Helpers encourage youth and their families through drug treatment, help connect them to community resources and organizations, participate in positive activities and build on a young person’s strengths to help them overcome the challenges they may face in their families, in school, in their neighborhoods and with peers.
