JUDGE ANTHONY CAPIZZI
Judge
Anthony Capizzi was elected Montgomery County Juvenile Court Judge in 2004
for a six-year term. Judge Capizzi had previously served as an Acting Judge
for Dayton Municipal Court from 1998-2002. Judge Capizzi, known as a workaholic,
continues to maintain the enthusiasm and energy for the welfare of children
that has been his trademark throughout his legal career.
Judge Capizzi, prior to his election, maintained a 25-year, full-time law practice specializing in juvenile law, family law and litigation. When elected, he retired from private practice, having been a partner for over 16 years with the law firm of Harker, Capizzi & Hall.
Judge Capizzi was admitted to the Ohio and Federal Bar in 1979, receiving his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law in 1979 and B.A. from Saint Bonaventure University in 1975. He graduated from Leadership Dayton in 1989. Judge Capizzi is co-author of “A Model for Judicial Leadership”, a book addressing a Communities Response to Juvenile Substance Abuse. He has taught at the Ohio Judicial College and lectured at numerous State and National Conferences focusing on Juvenile Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues. He serves as Chairman of the Montgomery County Dependency Case Management Task Force which he created to investigate a means to improve case flow management within the Montgomery County’s Juvenile Court System in cooperation with Children Services, Public Defender’s Office, Assistant Prosecutor’s Office, CASA office, and the Juvenile Court Clerk’ s Office.
Judge Capizzi, outside of his legal career, may best be known for having served our community as a City of Dayton Commissioner from 1986-1998. He is nicknamed by many “Mr. Baseball” for his leadership in bringing Dayton Dragons Baseball to Dayton over seven years ago. He vision resulted in the rebirth of Downtown Dayton with the construction of Fifth Third Field, the Relizon Building, the Schuster Performing Arts Center, and various creative housing projects including the Lofts and Performance Place.
Judge Capizzi has been active and held numerous leadership
positions in countless civic and professional associations within the community
over the last 27 years, including many that have focused on the needs and
education of children. Judge Capizzi served on the Board of Trustees of Daybreak,
Kids Voting, Student Employment Encourages Kids, the Dayton Downtown Optimists
Club and East Dayton Optimists Club.
