Miamisburg / Miami Township Breakfast
November 13, 2006
Montgomery County Juvenile Court Administrative Judge Nick Kuntz and Drug Court Judge Anthony Capizzi met with more than 30 business and faith leaders from Miami Township and Miamisburg on November 13 to ask for their support and participation in Reclaiming Futures, an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help kids caught in the cycle of drugs, alcohol and crime.
The appeal came during a breakfast meeting co-hosted by Miami Township Trustee Deborah Preston, president of the Miami Township Trustees, and Miamisburg Mayor Dick Church to raise local awareness of issues related to juvenile drug and alcohol use and crime in Montgomery County and to recruit community members to become Natural Helpers (volunteers) in the Court’s Reclaiming Futures program.
In 2005, 8,622 youth were referred to Montgomery County Juvenile Court by law enforcement agencies. Of those, nearly 1,000 were referred by law enforcement agencies and schools in Miamisburg and Miami Township. More than half of all youth referred to the Court in 2005 were in need of substance abuse and/or mental health treatment; thirty-five percent were under age 15; more than a third were girls; the youngest were just six years old.
